Sound Design

An Honours Project designed to innovate.

What is Sight Through Sound?

Sight Through Sound is an audio driven experience, which uses interactive and navigational audio to guide the player. As the player interacts with audio, they will have the world revealed or shrunk around them. This will depend on volume levels and the player actions.  The noise the player makes affects players visibility, which is showcased through the main mechanic; the light circle.

The project aims to be an interactive audio soundscape, allowing the player to see through sound. The circle of light the player has will dynamically change based on the materials they stand on, their actions and interactions within the game world.

This project used the following software;

  • Unreal Engine 5 - For building and developing the project.

  • Wwise Audio - For creating interactive audio, 3D spatialisation and using the powerful tools to create detailed audio soundscapes.

  • REAPER - For recording and editing audio, and composing soundtracks.

  • Jira - For planning and scheduling tasks.

Project Design

The goal of this project was to innovate, and to create a new way of showcasing interactive audio design in video games. Through much development and itteration the project developed into a unique experience for players, and a complex design challenge for myself.

Intuitive Design

The project focused on creating intuitive design aspects to aid the player, inviting them to play and experience audio in the driver seat.

Interactive Sound Design

Creating a project that focused on audio before visuals allowed for unique mechanics and design challenges, allowing the project to really dig deep into how designers can create a truely interactive audio experience.

Navigational Audio

Desiging a project that requires players to use audio rather than visuals to explore the game world, and then intrinsically linking this aspect to the interactive audio.
